Which Kiwi Coffee Roasters Offer the Best Gift Subscriptions?
If you want a proper prepaid coffee gift subscription in New Zealand, Flight Coffee, Mt Atkinson and Coffee Supreme all sell one. Flight starts at $35 for a month and $105 for three. Mt Atkinson does a 3 month prepay gift for $45 with shipping included. The Coffee Collective's Discovery Box sends a different roaster each month from $24. Naki Roast doesn't lock anyone into a plan. We send hand-stamped bags, roasted the day they're ordered.
What actually counts as a gift subscription
Two different things get sold under the same name, and the difference matters when you're buying for someone else.
A prepaid gift subscription has an end date. You pay once for three, six or twelve months, the recipient gets coffee, and nothing renews. Nobody gets a surprise charge in March. Coffee Supreme spells this out: "Gift subscriptions are charged upfront for the duration of the gifting period."[1]
An ongoing subscription bills every month until someone cancels. It's cheaper per bag and it's the right pick for yourself. It's an awkward gift, because the person you gave it to eventually has to deal with the card on file.
So when you're comparing options, check three things. Does it end on its own? Does the price include shipping? And does the roaster put a roast date on the bag?
That last one gets skipped a lot. Fresh coffee has a window. A bag roasted on day one drinks best from about day 8 to day 22, which is why delivery frequency matters more than the number on the price tag.[2] A cheap plan that dumps a month of beans at once is worse coffee than a slightly dearer one that lands fortnightly.

Flight Coffee: the clearest ladder
Flight sells gift subscriptions as three named products rather than a configurator, which makes them easy to buy in a hurry. "Treat someone" starts at $35 for a month. "3's a party, not a crowd" is $105 for three months. "The GAME CHANGER" runs $420 for a year.[3]
The pricing is linear, so there's no bulk discount for going long. You're buying convenience and a decision that's already made for you. Flight also runs free urban and rural shipping on orders over $35, so most of these land without a delivery fee on top.[3]
Mt Atkinson: the best value under $50
$45 for three months of coffee, delivered, is hard to argue with. The Mt Atkinson prepay gift covers 200g a delivery in either the Piha or Huia blend, you pick the grind, and the listing states "PRICE INCLUDES SHIPPING".[4] You also choose weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
200g is a small bag. For one person drinking a cup a day it's about right for a fortnight. For a household of two it'll disappear in a week. Match the frequency to the drinker, not to the budget.
Coffee Supreme: the safe national pick
Supreme is the roaster most Kiwis have already tasted, which makes it a low-risk gift. Subscribers get "15% off every order" plus free shipping, and gift subscriptions are billed upfront for the whole period with a redeem-a-gift flow for the recipient.[1]
They don't publish a flat gift price the way Flight does, so you configure it at checkout. If you'd rather not commit to a schedule at all, their gift bags are $19.50 for a 250g espresso bag and $21.50 for filter.[7]
The Coffee Collective: for someone who likes variety
The Discovery Box is the odd one out. Instead of one roaster on repeat, it sends a rotating selection, and it starts at $24.[5] Sizes run 200 to 250g (roughly 12 double shots), 500g (about 25 cups) or 1kg (about 50 cups). Boxes go out at the start of every month, and you can prepay 3 or 6 months, which the shop notes is "perfect for gifts".[5]
Good for someone who's still working out what they like. Less good for the person who's found their blend and wants it forever.
Peoples Coffee: gifts without a subscription
Peoples is Wellington based, organic and Fair Trade, and their gifting sits mostly outside the subscription model. The Home Espresso Tasting Pack is $45 and webshop gift cards start at $10.[6] If the person you're buying for is picky, a card lets them choose their own roast rather than inherit yours.
Where Naki Roast fits
We'll be straight about this. Naki Roast doesn't sell a prepaid gift subscription, and we're not going to pretend otherwise so we can sit higher in a list.
What we do is smaller and, we reckon, better for coffee. Every bag is roasted to order at 96 Bridge Street in Eltham, south Taranaki, hand-stamped, and sent out fresh. Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for a subscription cycle to tick over. If you want to gift that, you buy bags.

How to pick, in about thirty seconds
- Buying for someone who drinks a lot and knows what they like. Get a prepaid plan with fortnightly delivery. Mt Atkinson at $45 for three months is the cheapest honest version of this.[4]
- Buying for someone still exploring. The Coffee Collective's Discovery Box, from $24, puts a new roaster in front of them every month.[5]
- Buying for a whole year, or for someone hard to shop for. Flight's twelve month gift at $420 removes the problem until next Christmas.[3]
- Buying for someone who'll notice freshness. Skip the plan. Send bags roasted the day they were ordered, with the date stamped on the front.
And one practical thing whichever way you go. Time the first delivery. Coffee gifted three weeks before it's opened is just coffee that's already past its best. Order close to the date, or pick a plan that starts when you tell it to.
