You can buy specialty beans direct from the roaster in New Zealand. Naki Roast sells bags straight from its Eltham roastery in Taranaki, NZ$17 to NZ$18 for 250g, with no subscription to join. What "no middleman" actually means here

It means one of two things, and people mix them up.

The first is no retailer. You order from the roaster's own website and the bag comes from the roastery to your door. Nobody wholesales it, nobody shelves it, nobody marks it up twice.

The second is no trader between the roaster and the farm. That's a green bean question, not a shipping question. IncaFé sits here. They describe their coffee as "sourced directly from sustainable farms" [1].

Two things jump out.

Kilo bags are where direct buying pays, and the spread is wide. IncaFé's organic Marin is NZ$41.00 a kilo. Naki's Lab Rat is NZ$60. Escape subscribed is NZ$54.00, Rabbit Island subscribed is NZ$61.20, Ozone is NZ$69.00. Roughly NZ$28 a kilo between the cheapest and the dearest.

But the cheap kilo is only cheap if you drink it in time. A kilo is about 140 double shots. Buy the volume that matches your week, not the volume that wins the maths.

Rabbit Island: sized sensibly

Rabbit Island's seasonal blend runs across three sizes: NZ$20.00 for 250g, NZ$36.00 for 500g, NZ$68.00 for 1kg. Subscribe and save 10% takes the kilo to NZ$61.20 [7].

The 500g is the interesting one. Most roasters make you jump from a small bag to a kilo. Half a kilo suits a two-person house that gets through a bag every couple of weeks.

Ozone: the broadest range
